Social Enterprise Business Centre (SEBC) compiles the Social Enterprise Directory (SE Directory) every year. As of April of 2021, there were 659 social enterprise (SE) units, reflecting a 1.1% decrease from the previous year. These SE units were run by 341 organisations. 142 (41.6%) of them are charitable organisation (i.e. exempt from tax under section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance), while 199 (58.4%) are not.
Regarding SE business nature, the first three categories that account for the most in total are Health Care and Fitness (15.3%), Eco Living (15.2%) and Lifestyle (14.3%). Besides, there were 53 newly listed SE units. Their common obstacles are ‘High production cost’ (26.6%), ‘High rental cost’ (23.4%) and ‘Low public awareness’ (22.7%). They believe ‘Enhance public education’ (26.8%), ‘Increase financing channels’ (18.7%) and ‘Organisations and corporation adopt responsible procurement policy’ (16.3%) are the most helpful measures that can assist SEs.
