Aphasia is a disorder that results from damage to areas of the brain that produce and process language. In view of the difficulties faced by people with aphasia in communicating with their carers and others, the project team from speech therapist background targets to produce an augmentative or alternative communication tool namely “My Communication Kit” for people with aphasia and provide them with ongoing support services.
With reference to overseas experience, the venture will produce a kit with 40-page pictographic resource in local context, covering common places in Hong Kong, transportation, daily necessities, and common oral communication such as conversations with doctors.
People with aphasia and their carers will receive four free training sessions conducted by speech therapists on the use of the kit, and can opt to join two additional training sessions at a concessionary rate. In addition, trained volunteers will follow up with the participants after the training and provide individual support service concerning the use of the kit.
